Presentation Abstract

While solar energy makes up only about one percent of Minnesota’s current power generation, Minnesota has seen a dramatic increase in solar capacity from one megawatt (MW) to 882 MW over the last decade. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of solar power in Minnesota over the past decade and a brief discussion of expected future growth. In addition, the presentation will discuss the importance of and challenges of geotechnical site characterization as it relates to design of photovoltaic (PV) system foundations. The presentation will highlight site exploration, field, and lab tests, which are used to assess local soil, rock, and groundwater to better evaluate project risks relative to subsurface load capacity, frost susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermal resistivity.
