County Geologic Atlas Mapping in St. Louis and Lake Counties, Minnesota!

by Amy Radakovich, Minnesota Geological Survey

Presentation Abstract

The Minnesota Geological Survey is nearing completion of a multi-year mapping project that will produce Part A County Geologic Atlases for both St. Louis and Lake Counties in Minnesota. Because these two counties together are about ten times as large as a typical county mapped by MGS, we have divided them into several sub-areas. We have released preliminary products for each sub-area in an online open-file report as work has progressed. At this time, preliminary open-file products pertaining to bedrock topography and Quaternary geology are available for much of the two-county area, and preliminary bedrock geology products are available for the entire project area. Products include geologic maps, modeled raster outputs, cross-sections, and databases pertaining to surficial and subsurface sediments, buried sand bodies, bedrock relief, and bedrock geology. This talk will provide a status update for the various atlas elements, discuss what work remains to be done, and highlight some key findings of the research.
