AIPG Summary

The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) was founded in 1963 to certify the credentials of practicing geologists and to advocate on behalf of the geologic profession. The science of geology is vital to the interests of the nation and in order to best protect public health, safety, welfare, and the environment. AIPG is an organization of qualified geologists dedicated to this mission.

AIPG National coordinates and participates in several outreach events for state and federal government. These events emphasize the importance of professional geoscientists and the critical role geoscience has in decision making for many areas of society, including, infrastructure, environmental, resource planning, and public health.

The Minnesota Section of AIPG advocates professional certification, professional licensure, continuing education, and geoscience education.

What we do

Technical Talks

Technical Talks: The Minnesota Section of AIPG holds technical talks September through May, generally the first Tuesday of the month. The talks are designed to fulfill 1 Professional Development Hour (PDH). Professional Geologists, as licensed in the State of Minnesota, are required to complete 24 PDHs every biennium licensing period, including 2 PDHs of ethics.  Talks feature important subjects of interest to professional geologists. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend by registering online. We began webcasting our technical talks in January 2020.

Meeting Topics: We are always looking for engaging speakers and topics. Please contact AIPG MN Section Vice President, Tristin Faust, PG, EIT, with your suggestions.

Giving Back

Minnesota Section of AIPG supports geoscience education in Minnesota.  We donate mineral hardness kits to teachers, award an annual undergraduate scholarship, and support various geoscience education efforts.

Your contribution to the Education Fund helps support these activities and more - please see our Giving Back page.

Join Us

We hope you will find the Minnesota Section of AIPG webpage useful and informative. AIPG promotes geology as a profession and communicates regularly to federal and state legislators and agencies on matters pertaining to the geosciences.

We strongly encourage all qualified geologists to join AIPG - application information is available on the National AIPG website.

sponsorship

The AIPG Minnesota Section Sponsorship Committee is pleased to announce we are now offering Section Sponsorships for the 2026 calendar year (these are separate from the sponsorships for the annual Golf Scramble & Bicycle Ride fundraiser). This annual sponsorship will be $250 per year, and will provide the following benefits to sponsors:

  • Company or individual name/logo featured on the AIPG Minnesota Section website.
  • Company or individual name/logo featured on the AIPG Minnesota Section email blasts.
  • Two free lunch meeting attendances to be used at any time during the calendar year (cannot be carried over to later years). Two voucher credits will be added to your individual membership account and will be visible when you login on to the Minnesota Section website.
  • Option to give a 3-5 minute presentation at a monthly meeting (coordinate in advance with the Section President).

The AIPG Minnesota Section is one of the most active sections in the country because of the participation of our members. A large part of the participation in the Minnesota Section is the monthly meetings. Please consider becoming a Section Sponsor to help us continue to be able to offer low cost monthly meetings to all members, free meeting registrations to students, and support to various geoscience education initiatives as summarized on our Giving Back webpage.

If you would like to become a Minnesota Section Sponsor or have questions about the sponsorship, please contact at [email protected].

You can order your 2026 Section Sponsorship on our website here!

You are welcome to mail in your sponsorship check instead (please contact us at [email protected] for our mailing address).

Employment Opportunities

Don't forget to check with the employment page for recent posting of job opportunities. The intent of this webpage is to provide space to post employment opportunities for geologists in the Midwest, and Minnesota in particular.
