Member Benefits Of The Minnesota Section

Continuing Education/Professional Development: Technical talks are held monthly, September through May, generally the first Tuesday of the month. The talks are designed to fulfill the requirements of 1 Professional Development Hour (PDH) – Professional Geologists, as licensed in the State of Minnesota, are required to complete 24 PDHs every biennium licensing period, including 2 PDHs of ethics.  Talks feature important subjects of interest to professional geologists. Members and non-members are welcome to attend by registering online.

Licensing:The Minnesota Section tracks proposed changes to licensure of Professional Geologists and forwards that information on to our members.

Networking: Networking opportunities at luncheons, student/professional socials, spring social, and the golf scramble fundraiser.

Employment: Local job listings/classifieds on website and via email. Free resume reviews for students!

Continuing Education/Professional Development Opportunities: Through publications, seminars, short courses, and field trips, AIPG provides educational opportunities for geologists, other scientists, engineers, and the general public. The American Institute of Professional Geologists, in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines, presents the Management Development Program for Geologists and Related Professionals. This program is specifically structured for geologists and other scientific and engineering professionals.

Insurance Programs: Provides access to liability insurance for errors and omissions, designed specifically for geologists. AIPG also provides access to a full line of supplemental, life, and accident insurance.

International Reciprocity & Contacts: Through agreements with professional societies in other countries, AIPG provides access for its members to professional registration, certification, or chartered status in those countries.

  • American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) – AIPG CPG members may apply for membership with the AAPG, which carries the certification of a Petroleum Geologist.

  • European Federation of Geologists (EFG) – AIPG CPG members may apply for membership with the EFC, which carries the professional title of a European Geologist (EurGeol) in 21 nations. The EurGeol title is recognized by the Committee for Mineral Reserved International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) and the Pan-European Reserves and Resources Reporting Committee (PERC).

  • Geological Society of London (GSL) – AIPG CPG members may apply for Fellowship and validation as a Chattered Geologist with the GSL.

  • Australian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) – AIPG CPG members are recognized as Competent Persons by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) through their Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations (ROPO) procedure. A Competent Person may prepare reports on Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Ore Reserves for submission to the ASX.

  • Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (CCPG) – AIPG and CCPG have a Cooperation Agreement to promote cooperation between the two groups, recognize common standards, and encourage communication. Professional Geoscientists (P.Geo.) register with each individual province/territory.

  • The Institute of Geologist of Ireland (IGI) – AIPG CPG members may apply to the IGI without the need for sponsors.  Membership with IGI carries the professional title of a Professional Geologist (P.Geo.).

  • Qualified Person (QP) in Canada – AIPG CPG members are recognized as Qualified Persons by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) as National Instrument 43-101, the Canadian rules for reporting mineral resources and ore reserves. All reports containing estimates of mineral resources and reserves must be prepared or under the supervision of a Qualified Person, who, by being named as such, accepts personal liability for the professional quality of the report and underlying work.

Newsletter: AIPG members receive a weekly e-newsletter containing AIPG news and geoscience news.

Networking: AIPG members may network online on the National Facebook page and LinkedIn Page.  AIPG members may network in person at the annual conference and other national events. AIPG members may also network by utilizing the membership directory.

Ombudsman: AIPG intervenes with regulatory boards and agencies on behalf of individual geologists, at the geologist's request. Information also is disseminated in cooperation with the Association of State Boards of Geologists.

Online Courses/GOLI for Professional Development: AIPG, in cooperation with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), formed the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI). GOLI provides live and on-demand webinars for continuing education opportunities.  Many GOLI courses are free or reduced cost for AIPG members.  Courses are eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG if an official CEU certificate is needed for your professional licensure.

Other Certification: AIPG CPG members are considered certified geologists in the State of Alaska and AIPG CPG members are considered Certified Professionals for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Underground Storage Tank program.

Public Affairs and Lobbying Opportunities: AIPG presents testimony and position papers to Federal and State legislators and agencies on matters affecting geologists and geologists' employment opportunities. Exhibits at the National Conference of State Legislators.

Publishing Opportunities: AIPG members are encourages to publish articles in The Professional Geologist, published quarterly.
